Meet Our Copywriter
When designing a new website, most people think of the graphics, the code, and the aesthetics. But before you can build a website, you need to start with the foundation: putting your brand’s story and purpose into words. That’s where our copywriter, Katy Aguayo, shines.
What Does Katy Do at Riverworks?
When asked to describe her job at Riverworks in a nutshell, Katy simply said, “Words.” From web copy to newsletters to advertising and beyond, she is responsible for writing nearly all the material Riverworks produces for our clients.
From College to Copywriting
A graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Creative Writing program, Katy excels at developing engaging brand content that reads like a well-crafted tale. She loves meeting with clients to hear firsthand about their business and what sets them apart, seeing each project as an opportunity to learn and be curious.
A Lifelong Love for Stories
Her love of writing and crafting stories didn’t start at Riverworks or in college, though. Raised in Fairview, Tennessee, Katy grew up loving stories and saw them as a way to transport herself into new worlds. Some of her earliest memories are of reading in the middle of the night, eagerly waiting to see what Junie B. Jones or the Magic Treehouse kids would get into next.
This love of literature and language expanded as she went through school, taking a special interest in English and theater. Katy would often write her own short stories, one-act plays, and comedy sketches to pass the time in high school. Fun fact: she played the lead in Annie and was the Thespian Society president at her high school.
From Freelancer to Full-Time Writer
During college, Katy landed her first freelance copywriting job as a blog writer for Southtree, gaining valuable experience developing brand voices and crafting engaging content. After years of freelancing and working various roles in education, nonprofits, and insurance, she decided to pursue her love of writing full-time. She joined Riverworks in 2023, and the rest is history!
Katy’s Approach to Copywriting
At Riverworks, Katy approaches each project with curiosity, creativity, and a deep respect for the power of storytelling. To her, copywriting is more than just crafting words—it’s about understanding a brand’s voice and vision, and finding the most authentic way to communicate that to its audience. Every business has a unique story, and Katy’s goal is to uncover that story and tell it in a way that resonates emotionally and sticks with people long after they’ve read it.
Katy’s approach is grounded in research and discovery. Whether she’s writing for hospitality, recycling, or manufacturing, she immerses herself in each industry to ensure the content not only reflects the brand’s values but also speaks directly to its target audience. She loves the challenge of adapting her writing style to fit different industries and businesses, from the warm, welcoming tone of a family-owned restaurant to the professional yet engaging language needed for B2B services. Each project is an opportunity to learn something new and bring fresh, innovative ideas to the table.
Ultimately, Katy believes that great copy can inspire action, build trust, and foster meaningful connections between businesses and their customers. With every word, she strives to create content that informs, engages, excites, and leaves a lasting impression.
Life Outside of Riverworks
When Katy isn’t crafting stories for clients, she’s living one of her own. The opposite of a homebody, she thrives on staying active and filling her free time with exciting experiences. You can often find her catching local bands at live shows, acting in community theater productions, or gliding around a roller rink on her skates. Whether she’s out with friends or exploring the latest hotspots, she’s always up for something new and fun.
A true animal lover, Katy shares her world with her two beloved pets: Poppy, her dog, and Axle, her cat. They’re constant companions and never fail to brighten her day.
At her core, Katy’s mission in life is to spread joy and positivity wherever she goes. With her energy and enthusiasm, she brings that same spirit to the Riverworks team. We’re thrilled to have her as our resident wordsmith, coffee aficionado, and music lover.
